Welcome to WearLime

At WearLime we are passionate about lime - it has been used in construction for thousands of years  but fell out of favour in the last century - a huge mistake in our opinion.

There are so many benefits of lime - especially for stone buildings - please see our section Why Lime? for more details.

We have learned the traditional craftsmanship of working with lime and really enjoy seeing the benefits it brings to buildings when they are applied.

WearLime is also passionate about the wonderful qualities and beauty of oak - replacing a rotten old lintel with a lovely hand crafted oak beam surrounded by traditional lime plaster is a wonderfully satisfying job.

We also use heritage approved methods to clean stonework and bring it back to glory.

Why Lime?

Lime has several benefits over concrete. Lime is breathable, meaning it can absorb and evaporate moisture from surrounding masonry, which helps to protect the masonry and reduces the risk of salt and frost damage.

Lime is also more flexible than concrete, allowing for movement and thermal expansion.

Lime is softer than modern cement, which means that it is less likely to wear away the surrounding masonry over time.  Bricks and stones are also reclaimed more easily if dismantled. Additionally, lime is more eco-friendly than ordinary cement, as the lime manufacturing process produces less carbon dioxide than ordinary cement. Furthermore, it re-absorbs carbon dioxide, thus lowering its carbon footprint even further.
